Magnetic Fields Announces Additions To Its 2022 Edition

9 November 2022

One of India's premiere music event Magnetic Fields Festival just announced new names for its upcoming 2022 edition, which sees the contemporary arts and music festival return to its flagship grounds of Alsisar Mahal between December 9-11 after a pandemic-induced hiatus. Supplementing its previous announcement of forward-thinking heavy hitters, Magnetic Fields continues to platform new-age experiments alongside curating artists beyond just India and Europe.

The festival's residency 'Fieldlines' returns again this year, after a standout outing in 2019 – this time joining forces with The Forgotten Songs Collective to feature musicians from the Biate tribe, one of the oldest hill tribes in North East India, and electronica producer Vinayak^a for their first public performance together. 'Fieldlines: The Forgotten Songs Collective feat. Vinayak^a & Biate' will be a collaboration between Magnetic Fields, social-work-through-art organisation Rest of My Family, and M.A.P // A.M.P, the multi-pronged programme around music and activism by Goethe-Institut. Another special performance on the Jameson Connects South Stage will come from Delhi-based musician Jay Pei’s ensemble live show, 'Interlude', which will feature drummer Tarun Balani, singer-songwriter roradoll, composer-producer Sijya, guitarist Shivash Chagti and saxophonist Camillo Barrios.

Among its new selectors, the festival has added the likes of Japanese force DJ Masda and New York dance community figurehead DJ'J to the BUDxYard. Seoul-born Berlin-based party specialist DJ Fart In The Club will perform at the Ray-Ban Desert Oasis, alongside the crew from New Delhi's vinyl culture cornerstone Pagal Records and Goa-based selector Electroson to the Ray-Ban Desert Oasis, who will also perform a different set as Zionwolf. Meanwhile Egyptian Amsterdam-based DJ Disco Arabesquo will take over the palace's dungeon for an all-night set at Jameson Connects Underground.

For the live performances at Jameson Connects South Stage, Swiss sextet L'Éclair, Bangalore songstress Mary Ann, and an Irish-Indian generative music collaboration between The Fully Automatic Model and Kaleekarma will be supplemented by a showcase from the Indian leftfield, ambient and noise label Social Isolation, who will host Shantam, Pale Blue Dotter, Subhas Mazumdar, Subhojyoti Sen Sharma, Spiralynk and Hybrid Protokol at the Peacock Club.

Continuing to blend heritage arts into the mix, the festival's Puqaar Stage will feature a mega contingent of folk artists with Ustad Hakim Khan and Bairiyam Khan will play the kamaicha, while Jameel Khan, Mehboob Khan and Adreem Khan will handle vocal duties alongside Kutla Khan on dholak, Alseev Khan on suranda, Ugam Dhan ji on veena, Harkha Khan on matki, Khambhira Khan on murli, Idu Khan on Sindhi sarangi, Sikandar Khan on algoza and morchang and Kutle Khan on manjira. The stage will also play host to a traditional performance from the musicians of the Biate tribe as part of the Fieldlines residency.
