Lacuna Leans Fully Into Dubstep On New EP ‘Light Work’

24 March 2026

Chandigarh-born Mihir Sud aka Lacuna has moved to Ultrecth, Netherlands since we last wrote about him at the start of the decade. The producer, who previously explored within the massive sub-group of bass music, has increasingly leaned towards dubstep since, embracing it now fully on his latest EP 'Light Work'.

The 3-track release begins with 'Piff Dub' which demonstrates Sud's improved understanding of his music's relationship with the dancefloor. He puts a 2-step rhythm and a growling bass worming across the notes front and centre while how they interact with the supporting characters of chopped up vocal samples and dramatic string notes. Mid-way through the drums switch to a four-to-the-floor as Lacuna weaves an inter-genre journey much like a DJ.

While 'Piff Dub' mostly alludes to dub with the weight of its bassline and later, 'Arcane' would fully lean into more modern dubstep with its hook-laden vocal samples and the syncopated wobble of the low-end, the EP's middle track 'Out of the race' is where Lacuna exhibits the low-pressure of dub. A minimal assemblly, 'Out of the track' lets the bassline converse over an unintrusive pulse of a garage drumbeat while vocal samples and dub sirens echo out into the ether – offering a laidback catharsis even at the breakneck tempo, which the genre is best for.
