Exclusive First Listen: sudan & pruthvi Co-write On Gentle 'can you?'
19 June 2024
Mumbai's Pritpal Sudan who goes simply as sudan has already offered one of the strongest singles from the Indian indie space this year so far with 'omg'. It primed its encapsulating album 'sudan?', the young but experienced talent's long-form debut, as an anticipated release. Both 'omg' and its follow-up single 'Trouble' featured a polished embrace of organic electronica behind its pop songwriting, combining the precision and detail of electronic music with the warmth and texture of live performance.
On 'can you?', a track which sudan shares exclusively via Wild City ahead of the album's release on June 21, he leans on the latter while co-writing with pruthvi, another fledgeling artist behind a strong 2024 single.
"I think ‘can you?’ made me realise the love I have for honest writing," sudan tells us. "It truly encapsulates a big part of the philosophy that I live my life by and to co-write it with one of my best friends who understands this side of my life made it a much easier song to write."
The track reflects the extra songwriting effort as it arrives as one of the most songwriting-led numbers on the 13-track album, charming effectively and poignantly just through the vocal melodies over plucked guitar for half of its length and opting for tabla rhythms to keep things intimate even when breaking into the chorus.
In tandem with a template or affinity that emerges when listening to the entire album, sudan erupts into an energetic soundscape for the final section of the track, contrasting the warm softness of everything that came before it with abrasive textures and buzzing energy.
