'Lehrein': Ambient Compilation In Support Of Palestine Features Asfandyar Khan, Lapgan, MALFNKTION & More
4 June 2024
Karachi-based independent label and design studio GRUV.COAST Records is out with an ambient compilation entitled 'Lehrein' that brings together musicians from Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and beyond to raise funds for Medical Aid Palestine.
Split across 3 parts 'Paani, 'Aag' and 'Hawa', the 26-track compilation even features some rare ambient work by artists that usually offer more energy-charged music. For instance, the bounce-heavy Lapgan keeps the low-end sustained for long beds of harmonies as samples ring at a reverberating distance on 'Sach'. Even techno-associated Dynoman keeps the thumps buried behind aqueous layers on 'Heart Murmer'. The erstwhile-Mumbai-based MALFNKTION also opts for sizzling airy textures on 'Ztype' while city mate Moebius, in contrast, offers something more akin to a breakdown of a dance track stretched to form a composition on its own with 'Kastour'.
On the varied collection of largely placating groove-less beds of texture-led immersive compositions, India's Noni-mouse and Pakistan's Abdullah Kasumbi offer more melodic meditations in their lyrical songwriting though, in congruence with the compilation's theme, treat them the same way as any other layer of pad or synths: serving the larger assembly of textures. Among the more traditionally ambient works, the pattering of analog synth arpeggios and harmonies by Nigel Perera stands out with 'Telephenesis ft. Dread 404, PieAnnYeoh' alongside the glitchy grainy experience of 'Control Room' by Toronto-based Pyari and the following 'The Rubble In My Ears' by Bathtub Sailing.
