Parvati Offers Thumping Organic House With 'Naksha'

23 September 2022

It would be an overshot to pigeonhole the first two tracks of 'Naksha', the latest album by New Delhi's Ishaan Chatterjee aka Parvati, as house. While the two opening numbers 'Tala' and the title track carry a four-to-the-floor thump, the melange of acoustic sounds, especially of Ronojoy Sircar aka R#onbus' pitched-down Baul-style singing and the flute, plucked and percussive parts by Rishabh Puri and Arjit Ghosh on the latter track, focus more on creating emotive uplifting textures than providing a dancefloor number.

The underlying seething low-end and the visceral nature of electronic drums only take to the limelight 'Jogi' onwards, with Akshatha Kulkarni's classical-style vocals carrying the acoustic thread till the succeeding 'Raahi'. It's only in the closing two 'Shikaari' and 'Nikas' where Parvati fully enters the genre-typical grounds – letting themselves be guided by self-expression and reflection on abstract themes like nomadism, spirituality, ecstasy and search for identity on the 6-track release.
