Listen: ‘Forward: 20 Years Rainy City Music 1996 - 2016’

11 April 2017

After completing 20 years, most labels release a retrospective compilation of tracks since their inception. For Rainy City Music, they did it differently.

Label founder, Irfan Rainy, compiled eight original tracks that range from house to jazz, techno to Afrobeat - there’s also a bit of spoken word sprinkled in there. Bangalore-based UNNAYANNA remixed one of the tracks, ‘Shook’ and produced another ‘P9’.

Other artists on it include Detroit’s Wajeed, Yoruba Records Toto Chiavetta and 6th Borough Project’s Craig Smith. Watch out for tracks, ‘Detroit Is Black’ and ‘Truth (I Rainy Edit)’ as they’ll get you moving instantly.

UNNAYANNA, aka Prashant Pallemoni, is a Bangalore-based artist whose primary influences are Indian, African and folk music. His first track for the vinyl compilation was a mix of I Rainy & Bonafide Rojas’ ‘Shook’. A sultry track with spoken word layered on top, the soulful beat keeps the tune moving. His second, ‘P9’, is an original beat that’s hard-hitting in all the right areas before taking twists and turns in the realm of deep house.

Rooted in contemporary dance music, it’s a great listen. Listen below to a mix of the compilation and buy it here.
