That Boy Roby Set Out To Mix Haryanvi Ragini With Dub, End Up With A Psych-Rock Jam

6 May 2026

Returning after 5 years on the release front, Chandigarh trio That Boy Roby set out to combine Haryana's folk art of Ragini with quick-footed bass-heavy dub on their new single 'Haryana Calling'. Instead, the traditional vocal warbling of the former echoes out more like the chiming guitar chords that form a patient foundation over a nearly 2-minute build-up.

In some ways, the entire track is one massive build-up punctuated with a breakdown. It accumulates layers upon layers of guitars and their reverberations while the underlying low-end motif, inspired by dub and supplemented by the anchoring kick and primal percussion, grounds the whole adventure to a hypnotic pace and repetition. The genre experiment might not have succeeded in taking That Boy Roby where they hoped to go, but their usual fare of psychedelic rock has definitely found something to stand out with.
