Smiti Malik Lets The Songwriting Lead On 'Sad Songs For A Sunday'

25 June 2026

To stick to the most common sonic world of just voice, aided by drums and bass with guitar and/or piano, and not merge into the similar-sounding immense canon of work that already exists in that sonic world, requires great confidence in the songwriting. That is exactly what New Delhi-based Smiti Malik does on 'Sad Songs For A Sunday', her solo debut EP under her own name.

With very direct lyricism ("Can I take the day? Leave the bed unmade?"), Smiti, a founding member of the group Kitchensink, leads the way with the standout opener 'Back On The Floor Again'. She offers melodic hooks but doesn't overuse them, cascading away by building intense layers of vocals before dropping back into the hook. The groove speeds and slows like the subject of time on 'Free' while the closing title track settles into the lower notes for a drone-like effect.

Without counting on tricks, the 5-track EP packs variety, while the conviction in honest expression helps keep it elevated from other works in the genre.
