Nisal Offers UK Garage Rooted In Sri Lankan Sounds On 'Sikuru Express'
16 May 2025
After years of hip-hop beats, remixes, edits and flips, Singapore-based Sri Lankan producer-DJ Nisal has stepped into releasing original dance music with the track 'Sikuru Express'.
The UK garage track utilises presets from drum pads like Roland SPD20 and SPD30, which defined the sound of Bus Sindu, the musical sub-culture of the remixes and pop picks that played in Sri Lanka's buses through their overtly colourful sound systems and have since become part of the nostalgia tied to the daily commute on the island. However, the track is more special for its precise arrangement, which switches to folk rhythms mid-way before the breaks and their surrounding fuzzy synths get stale and introduces field recordings of train rides later on – further evoking the emotions of cultural memories while basing itself on the dancefloor.
