'BASS BOSS': Rana Ghose's Latest Documentary Spotlights DJ Khobir & Bengal's Dek Bass Culture

9 May 2025

Rana Ghose, the head honcho behind leftfield music platform REProduce and a filmmaker who has previously been one of the foremost people to feature subjects like the then-underexplored legacy of Charanjit Singh, has just debuted his new film 'BASS BOSS'. The short documentary, made with support from prominent label Ninja Tunes' JAMM Pro, puts the focus on Bengal's overwhelmingly loud sound system battles and one of its prominent figures, DJ Khobir.

While the sound system culture of the region has been featured in prominent editorial coverage and informed music of the likes of San Francisco-based diaspora duo Baalti, the documentary gets more up close instead of giving a general overview of the culture by focusing on the world around one of its proponents, DJ Khobir. It sheds light on the producer's roots, the characters around him that make their living from the sound system battles which feature gigantic setups competing against each other, Khobir's take on bass and its impact, and even touches upon the nitty gritty of the sound and equipment design – all with the more eclectic and understatedly humorous lens of Ghose.

The film 'BASS BOSS' is currently being screened across Delhi, Mumbai, and Goa, with bespoke REProduce Listening Room events. Find the screening dates and the trailer for 'BASS BOSS' below. For more updates, follow REProduce India.
