Baalti Present A Love Letter To 80s Bolly Disco With Sophomore EP

22 December 2022

After mixing their ethos as crate-diggers with lo-fi cuts on their eponymous debut release in 2021 and subsequent live shows that propelled them to wide respect among avid dance music listeners in India and its diaspora, Baalti return with a 2-track sophomore release 'Nan / Marigold'.

In contrast to the eponymous debut EP, 'Nan / Marigold' moves slightly away from the lo-fi aesthetic by embracing the synthetic timbres of 80s electronic music full with its laser toms and piercing string lines. While the San Francisco-based duo of Mihir Chauhan and Jaiveer Singh may pick up obvious cuts like Nazia Hassan's 'Lekin Mera Dil Ro Raha Hai' (the titular lines serves as the sample on 'Nan'), they creatively distance themselves from the source to create original house cuts that utilise the samples as a way to give nod to the influences and provide a decorative oomph.

The duo explains: "This is our love letter to 80s Bolly Disco. We were really just trying to capture the excitement and playfulness of that era, but through the lens of modern club culture."
