Synths Back Interplays Between Retro Sounds & Modern Musicality On New EP 'Consumer Cooperative Society'

25 April 2025

Abishek Chanda aka Synths Back takes inspiration from his roots in the Andaman to name his latest EP 'Consumer Cooperative Society' after the government-run grocery outlets, following up his 2021 EP 'Kioku', which was released via India's Krunk Kulture.

This time opting for Berlin-based club music-focused Emerald & Doreen Records, Synths Back turns to house music with an 80s-reminiscent sound palette, although featuring a modern sleekness. Tracks built around vocal samples like 'Rinse & Repeat' or around minimal, spacious, repeated synth motifs like on 'Aurora' also include pulsating string lines that duck under the oomph of the four-to-the-floor kicks. While 'Purveyor' emulates the arpeggios of acid house over italo-disco inspired basslines, it does it with a pristineness and morphing sound qualities allowed by modern sound design. Only the abbreviated titular track 'CCS' follows its retro inspirations more closely, reminiscent of simple hooks locked in a more complex interplay a la Giorgio Moroder, as it concludes a present-day outlook towards the futuristic visions from the past.
