Bios Contrast / Nilotpal Das Offers Rhythmic Experimental Soundscapes On 'unt1tled'
10 March 2025
Kolkata artist Nilotpal Das aka Bios Contrast recently released the latest outing of his abstract musical storytelling in the form of the EP 'unt1tled' via the British independent label Opal tapes.
Whether through harmonium drone tones or disjointed rhythmic onslaughts, Nilotpal has tethered himself to the edge of textures that completely swallow your senses without overwhelming them and still create placating ambient beds even if the component sounds are usually saturated and gritty. On the 5-track release championed via a label that's dedicated to the abstracted forms of club music, Das accomplishes the same using textures that carry the slightest semblance to inviting rhythms – whether through the scattered notes that merge into harmonic waves on the opener 'unt1tled 27' or the rhythmic echoes of 'art1fact'. It creates works that can be delivered to the dancefloor by a creative enough selector but that is a bonus than the primary purpose of the tracks.
With their fragmented presentations of dance music genres and Das' proven ability of drawing emotionally-resonant compositions, the 5-track release evokes the image of an equally fragmented reality: disorienting, foreboding but thrilling.
