Apoorva Mudgal Reinterprets Faiz Ahmed Faiz With Kora, Clarinet & Voice

Agra-born New York-based singer Apoorva Mudgal has just released her re-imagination of the poem 'Dasht-E-Tanhai' by prominent poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz. The cover is led by a stripped-down arrangement that includes the delicate performance of sounds from the world over: the European classical guitar by Ria Modak, Doug Wieselman on clarinet, Yacouba Sissoko on the West African kora, the more contemporary sound of bass by Dan Klingsberg, and the husky tones of Apoorva's own vocals.

The intimate recording keeps one privy to every click-clack of the instruments and every little inflexion of Apoorva's own singing. The simple production and sparseness of the arrangement not only let those elements noticeable but also pair well with the poem's imagery of a desert of loneliness.
