Father, Son & Alcohol's Microhouse EP 'Paranoid' Is Both Strange & Upbeat
8 July 2024
Bangalore's Rahul Desai aka Father, Son & Alcohol knows how to make a musical entrance or so he proves with his latest EP 'Paranoid', released via Safar Collective. A simple and effective opening passage leads into not-so-simple microhouse (a minimal techno-inspired subgenre of house) excursions with influences from IDM on the 5 original tracks which come along with 3 breakbeat-centred guest remixes.
Even though Desai brings together a myriad of otherworldly and strange textures on the characteristic grooves of house, the compositions aren't disconcerting or foreboding as abstract works of such nature tend to be. The music has an upbeat mood, save for the deeper and more sombre title track, even though it remains away from easily definable melodies and motifs until the retro arpeggios of 'Chasing Dragons'.
