Pulpy Shilpy Is At The Peripheries Of Leftfield Acid House On 'Greaser'

5 January 2023

Erstwhile with freak funk quartet Run Pussy Run, then coming into her own as Pulpy Shilpy with hip-hop-meets-indie-electronica outings and recently forming electro-punk quartet Happy Birthday over a residency in New Mexico, Gowri Jayakumar has been something of a musical shape-shifter. Her latest form within her moniker Pulpy Shilpy emerged after the Pune artist moved to Goa, embraced the decks as a DJ and started the label OCL Records.

Signalling the shift towards leftfield dancefloor-centric sounds with a track on her label's debut compilation, Pulpy Shilpy completes that transformation with her latest track 'Greaser'. The atmospheric number functions at the peripheries of experimental acid house, supplementing the anchoring drive of the snare with the thump of playful kick patterns still reminiscent of Gowri's formative styles. The reverberating arpeggiations define the psychedelic flavour of the track, showcasing Pulpy Shilpy's new embrace on using retro analog sounds in tandem with the modern approach of using them with all their quirk and zaniness à la Roza Terenzi or rRoxymore.

Hinting at her under-the-works project which is slated to offer technological innovation-driven audio-visual works with a femme gaze, 'Greaser' comes accompanied with an AI-generated artwork and visualizer that captures the track's disorienting nature.
