Hopeful Melodies Pair With Grief & Anxiety-Inspired Lyrics On Lotus Flower's 'A Night of the Jumps'

When he chose the moniker 'Lotus Flower' for himself, it was clear Shriraj Sagara wasn't trying to hide that he is influenced by Radiohead, his voice often choosing the relaxed, high-pitched falsetto singing that has defined frontman Thom Yorke's work. The Ahmedabad-rooted, Berlin-based musician continues to gradually build upon that influence in his latest EP 'A Night of the Jumps'.

The melodies of the falsetto singing lend more to the atmosphere of synth arpeggios, horn lines and steady percussion rather than inviting the limelight. Meanwhile, Shriraj's compositions carry a more uplifting quality even as they deal with an unsettled mixture of anxiety, grief and vulnerability. Notably, the pounding rhythm section of opener 'Ceremony', unlike the formerly mentioned namesake influence, keeps things more communal and inviting than introspective, even as the song attempts to capture the coldness and disorientation of a difficult winter.

The subtly gritty and detuned synth foundations of 'A Small Town Cries' harken more to the nostalgia found in works by acts like Boards of Canada, though the lyrics draw from fragments of news from Israel's war on Gaza. The track Shriraj join hands again with his brother Shantanu Sagara for another DIY music video, though with less production value than their previous stellar work 'Wilting'.
