Todh Teri Launches New Disco & House Vinyl Series With 'The Return Of Neela Devi'

6 August 2025

Todh Teri spent the latter half of the last decade and some of the start of the current with his 'Deep In India' series, bridging Indian film soundtracks primarily from the 70s and 80s with a more global take on house and disco. The Berlin-based Indian descent act and his co-founded label and collective Masala Movement have just launched a new vinyl series, naming them around characters from the 'Deep In India' series and continuing the act of bridging with the first instalment, 'The Return Of Neela Devi'

What's different is Todh Teri's approach. Unlike the more edits-like nature of 'Deep In India', the new series borrows the sonic palette of the vintage source material but uses it to construct entirely new compositions.

The standout A-side track 'Maalgaadi', for instance, utilises a gritty guitar sample and applies a whirring effect against its own echoes, complemented by hard-hitting disco grooves and basslines, to create a heady effect that easily transitions into the psychedelic energy of acid house for the latter half of the track. Acid house's defining sound of Roland TB-303 also finds a feature on 'Beauty Blues' but with a more laidback tempo, becoming the anchor as samples receive dub-style treatment to slowly and almost cheekily reveal their source: the 1969 Bollywood hit song 'Roop Tera Mastana'. The source material is nowhere as unobscured as at the breakdown of 'Cosmic Dirt', but even then, it's evident that Todh Teri is no longer just highlighting the beauty of soundtracks from yesteryears but using them to create something new altogether.
