mattress bf Present Experimental-Punk From Shantiniketan With 'clean virgin family'

Shantinekatan-based noise punk duo mattress bf recently released their debut EP 'clean virgin family' via the experimental music label dhooooooomketu.

Comprising Slowani Mishra on bass and vocals alongside Flesheatingturtles on guitars, drums and electronics, the duo takes inspiration from how the emphasis on 'family values' within traditional Indian households often becomes a perversion of their original intentions through walls of distorted guitars, glitches, dissonant noises, growling vocal and fast-paced pounding drums.

With the latter half of the 10-track release featuring recordings of live performances with the fidelity and meticulousness of a jam room recording of a punk band, what uplifts 'clean virgin family' from a collection of rehearsal demos is the conviction in the musical interpretation of the themes it tackles and its adherence to the subversive punk ethos. 'chimp warfare', for instance, very much feels like soundtrack to a primal quarrel while, in contrast to the rest of the EP, 'iwannadie' features the energy of barely mustering yourself to play. While such an act could be questionable in any other genre, in a style like punk that's more defined by the underlying attitude, a track called 'iwannadie' sounding like that makes perfect sense.

For listening pleasure, the most interesting entrants are 'CultSex' and 'Buh-bye Baby' where the presence of electronic drums next to lo-fi punk walls of sound results in a fresh combination like some of the most palatable child of noise and EBM.
