Blues-Rock & Retro Disco Combine On Farhaan Mistry's 'State Property'

13 July 2022

A deluge of genres collude on 'State Property', the debut single by Mumbai-based Farhaan Mistry.

The track begins with an upbeat surf-rock riff that shifts to the role of the foundation for distorted shouts, and brass and string stabs reminiscent of 70s and 80s Bollywood disco. Dialling up the grit of the song, Mistry's vocals enter with the nonchalance of a Johnny Rotten/John Lydon punk performance, interluded with the blues guitar riffs that take centre stage in the outro. The True School Of Music student makes the variety work by wearing his influences on his sleeve, drawing out the connection between the genres and presenting it with the rawness that feels modern while homaging the past.
