Mai Farosh Moulds Sufi Melodies Into Folk-Pop With Natural Ease On 'Paani'

You'd not expect the gentle journey that follows when thumping kick drums kick-off 'Paani' by Mai Farosh, the contemporary project of singer-songwriter Madhav Agarwal. However, instead of erupting, the song offers accessible and emotionally rich and deep lyricism that borrows from Sufi music and utilises Agarwal's learning as an esoteric composer to uplift what could have been a passé combination.

'Paani' rests at the sweet spot of being accessible and trying to be different. It is confidently pop in songwriting, but the lush vocal arrangements, soft production and economical structure remain just different enough to make the offering feel fresh and, in combination with its enchanting music video, soul-stirringly melancholic.
