Tour Preview: Malcolm Braff's Greenwoman

25 November 2014

Citizen of the world and renowned jazz musician Malcolm Braff is bringing his smooth sounds and idiosyncratic band to India. The pianist, born in Brazil, brought up in Senegal, is now based out of his native Switzerland. Braff, a grizzly, Viking-bearded, hulk of a man has been well known in and around Geneva for years now - winning audiences over with his wild onstage energy and impressive improvisation skills.

Braff has revealed his new jazz pop electro project, called Greenwoman, will tour India this winter. Greenwoman is a perfect example of Braff’s adaptability and innovation, mashing together the light sensibilities of pop and the moving beats of electro with his almost violent love for jazz. The project has a close connect with India - Braff wrote all the music here while taking part in an artist residency earlier in the year.

Profound in their comfortable simplicity, Greenwoman have a way of entrancing and delighting listeners, be it at a live gig or subtly over a pair of headphones and Soundcloud. The band’s line up includes Braff on the piano, Claire Huguenin on vocals, Björn Meyer on electric bass and Lukas Koenig on drums, with Alexandre Gaeng handling the video/visuals.

The live band, a swirling pot of organic sounds, will be doing a 6-city tour across the country, which has been organized by the Pro Helvetia Swiss Arts Council and Gatecrash. The tour will kick off in New Delhi at Hauz Khas Social, before hitting Hyderabad, Bangalore and Mumbai, with the JazzFest 2014 in Kolkata and the International Jazz Live Festival in Goa squeezed in.
