5 Minutes With: East & Young

27 May 2014

From the quiet, scenic city of Enschede there lives an electronic duo that’s been recently making a lot of noise – ‘East and Young’.

Comprised of Marc Vano and Ivo de Jong, their production has garnered international acclaim with the duos unique interpretation of big room dance music.

Vano and Jong started working on music together four years ago while they were still at school. Their debut track ‘Reveal’ released on independent Dutch label Spinnin’ Records back in 2008 received immediate attention from audiences around the world. This success encouraged them to push themselves further, helping them to develop their unique version of dance music, pulling forth influences from genres like indie and pop.

Last year, they signed a deal with Ultra Music/Sony label and released their new single ‘Starting Again (feat. Tom Cane)’.

In the run up to their debut Indian tour, we managed to catch up with the Dutch duo to find out a little more about their daily routine and what they’re looking forward to doing in India.

How’s it going?

Everything is fine. Except for the weather; it’s been raining cats and dogs for over a week.

Where are you right now?

We’re in the studio, working on our new club track - it’s gonna be massive.

What’s in your pockets?

Keys, some money and a USB stick

What’s the last song you listened to?

London Grammar – Shyer.

Last record you bought?

Hook N Sling ft Karin Park (Axwell Remix).

The first record you bought?

That was Weezer – Buddy Holly. In 1995 I guess – we grew up listening to all kinds of genres.

Artist you currently have on repeat?

Right now it’s our new club track, working on it in Logic.

When was the last time you felt lonely?

When I locked myself in the toilet. It happened a few months ago in a restaurant.

Earliest memory?

I think our first holidays? We don’t know exactly to be honest; it was a while ago.

Star Trek or Star Wars?

To be honest, we don’t like either of them.

James Bond or Jason Bourne?

James Bond, especially Sean Connery. The latest Bond films were great as well, but unfortunately missing that typical Bond vibe.

Dogs or cats?

Marc has a dog. Ivo has a cat. He loves to be in the studio when we are working on new music.

Favourite place in the world?

New York, but also our hometown Enschede, of course.

Preferred mode of transport?

Car

Your favourite story as a child?

That must be a fairy tale. I would say Tom Thumb.

If you weren’t making music what do you think you’d be doing?

Nothing, we guess.

If you could work with any one person, living or dead, who would it be?

Freddie Mercury, that guy was a genius when it came to melodies.

Thoughts on coming to India?

We are really looking forward to our gigs in India. We also hope to have some time for sightseeing. We always love to learn something about the countries we are playing in. We’ve never been to India before so we're really excited!
