Shashwat Bulusu Examines Politics Within Relationships On 'Tanashahi' The First Single Off His Debut EP

29 August 2024

Shashwat Bulusu is one of the most capable indie artists in India when it comes to soaking each musical element with a deep emotionality – and that is not a hyperbole. The mood evoked by the purposefully unpolished piano chords that kick off his latest single 'Tanashahi', the first one from 'Fitrat' his first EP in 12 years of his career, is a testament to it.

With a minimal sonic palette similar to his previous Hindi language offerings like 'Aabaad' and 'Raani', 'Tanashahi' counts upon up close hand percussion, vocal harmonies and finger snaps to build a sense of intimacy. That intimacy is paired with a lullaby-like melody that accompanies the lyrics reminiscent of yesteryear's Urdu-rich poetry as they deal with the politics within a romantic relationship. Though the experimentation with distorting the voice in the second half takes away some of the effects that had been established by then, there is enough merit in the single to bring you back for another emotional ride.

Listen to 'Tanashahi' below before its encapsulating EP 'Fitrat' comes out on September 20 and follow Shashwat Bulusu for more information.
