Krantinaari Is Crowdfunding A Safe & Accessible Mobile Studio For Women

14 June 2024

Mumbai rapper Ashwini Hiremath aka Krantinaari has recently launched a campaign to raise funds for setting up a mobile recording space with an emphasis on providing a safe space in it for women.

"Through my investigations, I uncovered a dark truth: countless women endured the horrors of sexual harassment, abuse, and unjust treatment within studio walls," announced Ashwini while noting how being from Mumbai might give her easy access to recording studios, but it remains arduous for women elsewhere. To counter both the lack of accessibility and the risk to women's safety several studio environments pose, the Mumbai rapper has partnered with Delhi-based NGO and choir Manzil Mystics Foundation in raising funds and building a mobile recording studio.

Manzil Mystics themselves launched a mobile studio and music classroom in 2022 to support their music education initiatives while initiatives like Sangeetcar use a portable recording setup to archiving folk traditions. In her case, the rapper has expressed her intention of taking the recording studio to remote parts of the country like North India's Kumaoni region to give agency to the musical voices there.
