Kumail Returns After 6 Years With New Single 'Darlin'' Via Tru Thoughts

Erstwhile Mumbai-based musician Kumail Hamid last released new music with his seminal R&B album 'Yasmin' back in 2019. 6 years later, with relocation to Lisbon and a marriage in between, the multi-instrumentalist and producer has just returned with a new single entitled 'Darlin'', which is released via Tru Thoughts, the label associated with the likes of Bonobo and Flowdan.

If 'Yasmin' had remnants of Kumail's formative style of lo-fi beatmaking and textural ambient works as he pivoted to neo-soul and R&B influences, the latest single roots itself firmly in the swagger of the latter as expressive guitars noodle around fuzzy electric piano chords while his collaborators like bassist NATE08, drummer Dhir Mody and Grifton Forbes-Amos on trumpet provide equally embracing beds. Over it, Kumail and Rahel lay down the romantic vocal lines, enhancing the production style's laidback and seductive nature and taking a cue from influences like D'Angelo for some musical lilt and sensuality.
