RANJ x Clifr Flip The Male Gaze Of 90s' Hip-Hop On ‘I’M JUST A WOMAN FORREAL’

Chennai-rooted Ranjani Ramadoss aka RANJ and her regular collaborator Bangalore-based producer Clifr have just released a new single entitled 'I'M JUST A WOMAN FORREAL'.

The first single off RANJ's upcoming mixtape, 'I'M JUST A WOMAN FORREAL' takes the commonly found chest-thumping and expression of sexual desire towards women by male artists in hip-hop and turns it around to sing and rap about feminine desires.

"I wanted to rap and sing about sex as if I was a man in the 90s. It’s kinda like barely controlled rage, made sexy," says RANJ, who also offers the single as a love letter to Pharrell Williams, with the songwriting and production giving a nod to the prominent artist.

Beyond the concept, Clifr's production stands out for letting a few efficient elements do the trick. Rattling kicks, the assisting bassline and guitar stabs resound, adding a powerful impact to the space RANJ occupies between pop and hip-hop, adding an empowering edge to her sultry and satiric delivery.
