Listen: ‘Overthrowing Magnus’ By Aqua Dominatrix
25 October 2016
Mumbai based producer and guitarist of Scribe and Pangea Akshay Rajpurohit, a.k.a. Aqua Dominatrix recently released his sophomore album ‘Overthrowing Magnus’ – a follow up to his well received debut release ‘Sadomist’.
I think it’s pretty safe to say that Aqua Dominatrix kickstarted the retro-throwback, analogue worship style (particularly in his live sets) that’s so on trend with younger Indian producers. His debut album ‘Sadomist’ emulated the synthy pop melodies of the 80s, and the same sensibilities are worked on in ‘Overthrowing Magnus’ – which was inspired by a trip to Norway and takes its theme, imagery and name from the reworking of an old tale of a woman who had killed three kings (one of them being the made-up Magnus). Rajpurohit tells KRUNK that he wanted something “dark and sinister, and better than what I did last time.”
In ‘Overthrowing Magnus’, we can see the growth the producer talks about; it compensates for ‘Sadomist’s imperfections by unifying its music into a coherent album whose songs flow unhindered. The largely pop sensibilities of the previous album also give way to a sound that’s a bit darker and more obviously techno influenced.
