New Delhi's Digging In India Launches Physical Release Label
30 January 2025
Nearly a year after New Delhi's prolific record collector and archivist Nishant Mittal gave the city a new place to discover and purchase physical copies of rare and popular music with the store 'Digging In India', a namesake of his moniker, he has expanded his efforts with the launch of Digging In India Records.
"The idea of the label started somewhat because of a desire to own these albums on physicals myself, and I was sure there are people out there who feel the same," Nishant tells us. Kickstarting a discography that aims to physically release fresh alternative Indian music as well as re-issue some funk and disco-rooted Indian albums from the 60s-80s, Digging In India Records has put out cassettes of hip-hop group Excise Dept.'s debut album 'SAB KUCH MIL GAYA MUJHE VOL. 1' (including a cassette-only bonus track).
"I always noticed that there was a lack of physical releases in India and understandably so - there are no cassette duplication services here, and only now after 30 years is there a big-scale record manufacturing plant in India, so it feels good to contribute to the physical releases space," continues Nishant, who has found himself pleasantly surprised that the initial batch of Excise Dept's 100 copies has sold out in India within 3 days.
Alongside the intention of branching out into vinyl releases later this year, Digging In India Records already has new releases and re-issues of Indian underground classics in the pipeline.
