Excise Dept Take A Dig At The Absurdity In Present-Day Religious Figures On 'Baaro Maala'

2 May 2023

After sporadic releases over the last 3 years and the occasional collaboration, New Delhi-Mumbai artist collective EXCISE DEPT recently dropped their new single 'Baaro Maala', marking the release with their first-ever live show as well.

Describing themselves as "inspired in equal part by right-wing news channels, the deeper abysses of Indian digital spaces, Whatsapp forwards, 90s Bollywood romance, Desi folklore, postcolonial history, trap music, bootleg Pakistani meme videos, and post-2020 dystopia", the collective uses the new single and its music video to stitch together clips of modern-day religious figures to highlight the absurd performative nature associated with some of them. Musically, 'Baaro Maala' leans towards hip-hop with multi-lingual raps but with peppy pristine retro wave production to create a combination that's fresh to either of the genres.

Listen and watch 'Baaro Maala' below and follow EXCISE DEPT for more.
