Cana Nongkhlaw Is Gently Upbeat On Debut EP 'Meet Me in Gaḏ-Šmānê'

19 January 2024

Shillong's Cana Nongkhlaw has just released an introspective debut EP entitled 'Meet Me in Gaḏ-Šmānê', a collection of 4 jazz-tinged folk-pop tracks reminiscent of the likes of Norah Jones and Katie Melua.

Full of wistful notions from running away romantically and dreaming of distant places, to sorting out thoughts, encouraging words and an ode to Cana's mother, the poetic nature of the lyrics adds a hint of melancholia – all getting rendered gentle with Cana's vocal performance that gets softer every time she briefly soars to falsetto. The production and arrangements from Gregory Ford Nongrum, Aidan Wankhar and Daryll Diengdoh opt for tried and tested sounds that only ever stay in supportive roles, letting the spotlight remain on Cana's songwriting and performance which assumes a lullaby-like quality as its chorus never jump out for attention so much as act like comforting refrains to come back to.
