Sourya Sen Captures His Time Living Across Places With The Abstract Album 'In The Cities'

12 July 2023

Mumbai-based audiovisual artist Sourya Sen, who previously also released as Oblique, presents his introspective album 'In The Cities,' an exploration of temporary living and personal experiences across various cities. Sen's project delves into the universal notion of finding a sense of home in a constantly shifting world.

The album, released on Bandcamp, comprises 11 tracks that incorporate field recordings, modular synthesizers, and a fusion of ambient and experimental sounds. Opening with 'Petrichor,' a recording of rain outside Sen's childhood home in Kolkata, the album progresses through compositions such as 'Transit,' 'Settle,' and the poignant closer, 'The Long Goodbye.'

Sen's experiences during his time studying new media design and production in Helsinki influenced the conceptualization of 'In The Cities.' The album encapsulates his reflections on the transient nature of existence and the absence of a fixed sense of home.

Despite the album's association with his time in Helsinki, Sen emphasizes that it is not a pandemic project even if majorly composed during it. The tracks 'Plastic Elastic' and 'Elastic Plastic' reflect his contemplation of time's elasticity and its impact on his perception of the passing years.

As 'In The Cities' captures a specific period and environment, Sen acknowledges the potential for a future instalment, as he envisions a life without settling down. The album stands as a testament to the artist's evolving relationship with sound and his ability to create immersive sonic landscapes.
