Textured Percussion, Ghatam & Club-Friendly Structures Define Krithi's 'Nilapparappu'

13 September 2021

Brooklyn-based Indian act Krithi's latest 4-track EP 'Nilapparappu' is without any misses – sampling organic percussions, with the most notable being the Ghatam, and laying them out with the rhythmic sensibility of electronica. The result is an acutely well-structured club-friendly record that stands apart with its unique choice of sonic palette and how its subtle layers come together to function as a compelling whole of which each detail is felt on the skin.

The EP keeps its either end gently rocking in tempo with the visceral opener 'Murmurs' and the sparse aptly-title number 'Respite'. The highlight, however, comes with 'Upheavel' and 'Fissures' – with the former turning up the tempo and rhythmic intensity to breakbeat levels before letting the techno feel of the latter take over.
