Watch/Listen: Oblique Audio Visual EP ‘Berlin: Not At War’

1 June 2015

Sourya Sen is Oblique – a Mumbai based live visual artist whose work has involved VJing, filming or just generally being a part of music events like the Border Movement Soundlab, Colombo Video Lab and Magnetic Fields 2014. His latest audio-visual project ‘Berlin: Not At War’, sees the artist make the natural progression to production to go along with his music.

Consolidated into a single video just over 11 minutes long, the EP features four tracks and black and white visual loops of the city of Berlin. It was shot while Sen was on a three month artist residency at the Institut für Alles Mögliche.

‘Berlin: Not At War’ is his first foray making both visuals and music, so it’s a bit rough around the edges, but definitely worth a watch. What’s interesting is how Sen incorporates VJing techniques with music video aesthetics, while maintaining a cinematic feel overall. He also uses more advanced techniques like 3D animation (to create an unnerving pulsating orb in ‘Ghost Town / Spring Will Come’) and stop motion.

He’s had a little help making the short film from Naman Saraiya, who helped shoot it and Akshay Rajpurohit, responsible for mastering the EP. His album art can be credited to Nikunj Patel.
