Karshni Screams Her Way Into A New Style On ‘Gaping Hole’

If the recently released single 'Gaping Hole' is to be trusted for the direction Karshni takes on her upcoming record, the Mumbai-based singer-songwriter has undergone a major stylistic shift.

Instead of the deeply lyrical meanderings over acoustic foundations that we have known Karshni to offer, 'Gaping Hole' expresses more through its abstract production than words, which mostly adhere to dramatic spoken snippets around the refrain: "Is there anyone to fill this gaping hole of mine?". From its fever dream collage, the dread and frustration in the words grow into a scream that ushers in an assault of heavy drums and distorting riffs. This is Karshni daring her way to sonics that are not held back by conventions – a welcome new dimension for an artist who has repeatedly proven her strength lyrically, which, it is safe to assume, will combine with the new as she unveils more work.
