Joshua Singh Combines Alternative Folk Rock Elements With Hindi Pop Writing On 'Bheegein'

1 July 2025

After wearing the influences of heroes like Bon Iver on his sleeve, Mumbai's Joshua Singh has undergone a sort of reinvention when it comes to his musical output since the pandemic. With a language switch to Hindi in his songwriting, the ex-Spud In The Box member now marries his lush layered style more judiciously with pop works – best exemplified on his latest release, the EP 'Bheegein'.

Percussive yet mellow acoustic guitars underpin most of the compositions as reverb-drenched layers decorate the background on the 5-track release. It's a combination that works best when it leans on its emotive qualities, for instance, in the mellower sections like that shehnai-underscored opening verses of 'Dil' or the entirety of the title track and less so on the cliche pumping beats that the former track or the middle number 'Lotta Love' break into.

At its highlights, 'Bheegein' takes pop Hindi lyricism and instrumentation that is known to the average Bollywood soundtracks listener and elevates it with a production style from alternative genres to add a freshness to the familiar.
