KAVYA & Goya's Collaborative Single 'Fences' Is A Mix Of Gentleness & Tension

Two musicians with contrasting styles New Delhi's electropop-R&B singer-songwriter Kavya Trehan and composer-producer Abhishek Sekhri aka Goya, who usually deals in ambient and downtempo, have come together and just released their collaborative single 'Fences'.

"I became curious about what it would be like to work with an artist whose core lies in sound design," says Kavya, who took the inspiration for the lyrics from a personality test the two musicians took together as an exercise to build rapport for the collaboration. The track about coming together through separation (emotional if not physical) combines a gentle delivery by Kavya with a tick-tocking drum groove and a toothy sustained bassline with distant pads – all adding to a production seeped in the darkness and tension akin to a noir-thriller.

The impression of the combination remains weak in the opening verse as the restrained melodic distance of the vocal lines comes off too on-the-nose in delivering that thrilling tension. That is, until the chorus' more languid sultry melodies create a contrast, which is carried by the heightened delivery of the same verse lines in the final section, delivers the engaging energy and variety that gives merit to this collaboration of two contrasting artists.
