Ditty Presents Rousing Anti-Capitalism Joy With 'Money'

31 January 2024

After introducing her upcoming EP 'Skin' with 'Hold Me' in October 2023 and going on an India-wide tour since then, erstwhile Goa-based and now Berlin-residing singer-songwriter Aditi Veena aka Ditty has released a new single entitled 'Money'.

Modern indie in its production, and simple melodically and upbeat rhythmically like the folk protest songs of the 60s, 'Money' is an easy audience-rouser with its heavy drum-led drive and its sing-along refrain: "There will be things that money won't buy."

An environmentalist with a background in urban ecology, Ditty wrote the song after a personal saddening experience upon returning from a tour to her previous residence in the quaint North Goan village of Betim. She explains: “There was a forest behind my house – my bedroom window used to open into the forest that was full of rain trees. I returned to see that all the trees were gone! I got to know that they were chopping the forest down, and it was quite painful and I wanted to talk about it via the song.”.

While the song remains jovial in its main body – as evident from the performance below – featuring an optimistic resilience, it contains within itself samples from the forests in Goa, with the recorded version offering an extended outro that sees the positive tune ominously ending into a soundscape of falling trees, sawing machines and crying animals.
