While indie-rock, by definition, is supposed to denote not so much the sonics but the way they are supported and promoted – coming from the term independent rock. Over the years, as the very definition of 'independent' has blurred, indie-rock has become a sonic category and the latest entrant in India to represent it is Long Distances.

Composed of seasoned acts like Aarifah Rebello, Apurv Agrawal aka Cowboy & Sailor Man and Zubin Pastakia, the trio, which formed during the pandemic through remote collaboration, has showcased the puristic elements of the genre. Their two singles released so far are defined by uptempo snare-driven backbeats, shimmering walls of shoegaze guitars combining with chillwave synths to provide grandness, and melodic hooks that carry and complement the lyrics.

On the latest 'Lovesong for an Apocalypse', which also features Jai Row Kavi, Sanaya Ardeshir aka Sandunes and Krishna Jhaveri as session artists, the layers come together to platform the mellifluous songwriting that's delivered through Aarifah Rebello's honeyed-yet-energetic vocals as she sings of romantic hopes and nostalgia while facing the inevitability of it all coming to an end.
