"Megabox: An "Alternative Record Label" - Watch Preview Video"
1 October 2012
Last week a preview video was posted online for Megabox, Megaupload’s “alternative music store”.
As we reported earlier this year, Megabox was first revealed in an interview with Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom. Dotcom revealed his plans to directly compete with majors such as Universal Music Group “via a site that will soon allow artists to sell their music directly to consumers while allowing them to keep 90% of earnings.”
“We have a solution called the Megakey that will allow artists to earn income from users who download music for free,” Dotcom told TorrentFreak, “Yes that’s right, we will pay artists even for free downloads. The Megakey business model has been tested with over a million users and it works.” Given Megaupload’s popularity (once the 13th most popular website in the world), this prompted speculation that Megabox’s potential was a key reason for the American government shutting down the site and storming Dotcom’s New Zealand mansion.
A new video on his YouTube channel now provides a preview of the website and it's not looking too bad at all (well, apart from the backing track made by Kim Dotcom himself). You can watch it in full below:
