Crowded But Compelling, MONé’s 'Metamorphosis' Combines Broken Beat With Gritty Ambient Techno
22 September 2025
Kerala producer-DJ Sooraj Sivadas aka MONé just released the EP 'Metamorphosis' via New Delhi's internet radio and record label Bøne.fm.
The 4-track EP operates between fractured visceral rhythms of broken beat techno and leftfield noise-ambient. Here the acid squelches of a Roland TB-303 (or its soundalike) distort into noise on the title track, the rumble of a techno kicks joins the dense reverb of chanting vocals-like layers to add to the foreboding background on 'Fraktals', and engulfing textures of 'Shed' remain intense enough to dominate even the hardest of drums until they consciously step back to only subtly contribute their atmospheric effect to grooving mechanical drum patterns.
At times, however, the stylistic combinations throw too many ideas in a short span of time – something that will work for someone with a maximalist appetite or when its isolated sections are recontextualised and sustained befittingly in a DJ set to truly let the EP's refreshing take on its base genres take flight.
