Skrat Release Concept Hard Rock Album 'Circus Act'

3 February 2025

Chennai garage rock band Skrat recently released their 5th album 'Circus Act'. Embracing the stylistic association of 'garage rock' very literally, the band recorded the 5-track release live in a garage – without metronomes or overdubs.

The process takes advantage of and is only possible for delivering as energetically cohesive work as it has due to the tight chemistry the band has developed over its more-than-15-year existence. Not only that, but it helps to bring out the raw vocal delivery of frontman Sriram TT on the title track in all its dramatic tonal variety. It's a drama that serves the album's conceptual narrative which deals with the story of Slingscot, a circus performer who also takes part in covert operations before getting captured and being used by her captors to bring down.

Listeners of just this album might not find much value from the narrative and that's fine as it doesn't take away from the energy and maybe some potentially niche and flippant humour (intentionally or unintentionally 'Slingscot' features the phrase "Caught In The Middle" repeating in a melodic flow that's been pointed to be uncannily present everywhere). For long-time fans of Skrat who are familiar with the lore introduced by the group's previous work will be glad to see the lore deepen.
