Kiss Nuka Releases 'Witches Brew' Fresh Off Her Glastonbury Debut
15 July 2024
Fresh off her Glastonbury debut, Anushka Manchanda aka Kiss Nuka recently released her EP 'Witches Brew'.
The 4-track release is best put in context with its leading single and title track, about which Anushka explains: "'Witches Brew' is my electro-pop experiment. The lyrics came first and laid the groundwork for how I approached the production and composition thematically, keeping a sense of playfulness in the arrangement." With the production having developed around the vocals, the composition features a focused central element while its underlying layers continue to exhibit the sharp audacious edge and hard intensity that the Spain and India-based musical polymath introduced with her acclaimed 2023 EP 'Serpentine'.
For the title track, the central element is delivered in the form of manipulated vocals, as they pitch up and down and whirr across as hooks to carry the "playfulness". Meanwhile, the following number 'Night Of the Blood Moon' carries that zaniness in its morphed shouts and synth stabs even as the rest of it is reminiscent of the rumbling darkness of a warehouse rave.
The juxtaposition of the upbeat joy and dark and wild visceral power is what defines the mood of the EP that musically shows Kiss Nuka perhaps at her most joyous while surrounded by a foreboding world built by the EP's imagery, titles and thunderous low ends. The artist explains: "This EP is a dedication to the strength and magic of women…Full of light and expansion, yet holding the power to bring darkness when provoked. Here's to the casting of spells, the celebration of the wild women and the sharing of their wisdom.”
