Prabh Deep Returns To Mellow Richness On 'KING Returns'

17 January 2024

Noted for always successfully functioning independently of wider ongoing trends in desi hip-hop, prominent rapper-producer Prabh Deep has just released a new EP called 'KING Returns'.

Though the genre's common fare of 808s and trap drums do make an appearance on the track 'Ethe Rakh', the 6-track EP sees the New Delhi artist opt for mellower textures and jazz-R&B-rooted drums, doing the heavy-hitting with his verses instead. The lo-fi ambience and neo-soul instrumentation of the EP harkens back to, as the title also suggests, his 2019 EP 'K.I.N.G.'

The importance instead is given to the rich variety of flow and styles that the compositions encapsulate, leaving room for the most personal of narratives. Out of these, Prabh Deep's processing of the grief of losing his father in the second half of 2023 feels most poignant on 'Yaadaan', where the mellower textures emerge as an undisputed and emotionally potent choice. Following close behind in quality and a fresh feel, 'Girgit' accomplishes a similar soulfulness that's almost psychedelic as electronic drums maintain the languid nature of its preceding tracks before switching the beat mid-way to bring the listener into an upbeat joy.
