J Dilla's Mother To Launch Record Label 'Ruff Draft'

14 May 2012

J Dilla's mother, Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey, has recently announced the launch of Ruff Draft Records, named after the 2003 Dilla EP Ruff Draft.

The label aims to put out unreleased material from one of hip-hops most iconic and influential producers, J Dilla, who tragically died after being diagnosed with TTP and Lupus in 2006. The label's first release titled Rebirth of Detroit is due to be out on 12 June and will feature a number of Detroit artists including Danny Brown rapping over unreleased Dilla beats.

Ruff Draft will also release music from young and upcoming hip-hop artists: "We want to make it more feasible to interact with these children; we don’t know how many J. Dilla’s we have out there. Somebody has to find them.” - Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey

“I’m not down for the count” Ms. Yancy also said, “I’m a hip-hop head and I love it.”
