Applications Open For The Next Round Of Music Basti

16 June 2014

Set up in 2008, Music Basti is an initiative founded by Faith Gonzalves that connects at risk children, youth and artists in Delhi with the aim to rouse a sense of community and learning through what is one of the most powerful influences in today’s world – music, or in a broader sense, creativity and the need to express.

Applications for teaching artists with the Music Basti are now open. The deadline is 30 June and anyone who is a musician proficient in either Hindustani or western vocals or instrumentation (professional or not), is invited to apply. All the details and criteria for application are available here.

Music Basti also put out a video of their Resound community program (embedded below) that took place between July 2013 and April 2014. It explains better than I can what Music Basti does – the kind of confidence and joy that both the children and their teachers experience through the program is evident. In the 2013 session, Music Basti had worked with students from Dil Se Campaign, Tarang Kala Kendra and Society for Labour and Development as well as Vidya, Papankalan and Kapashera.

So far, the project has touched the lives of over 500 children and worked with more than 200 musicians and artists. By building a network of partnerships with existing welfare organisations, Music Basti is an empowering project that’s making possible a world where all children have the opportunity to enjoy art and incorporate music and media into education.

I suggest that anyone interested in applying have a look at their video below:
