"RIP “The Godfather Of World Music" Ravi Shankar"

12 December 2012

Indian sitar legend Ravi Shankar, known for his in-depth understanding of various styles of classical and traditional music has passed away in California aged 92.

It was in 1966 that he famously met George Harrison, lead guitarist of The Beatles in London. Harrison later came to India to learn to play the sitar, going on to famously use the instrument in The Beatles track 'Norwegian Wood'. This shot him into the limelight and he quickly became a figure celebrated for popularising classical music in the West.

He was labelled “the godfather of world music” by the legendary English musician.

In 1971 he went on to introduce the concept of a rock benefit concert with Harrison at 'Concert For Bangladesh', which later inspired other rock benefit concerts including Live Aid in 1985.

Father of musicians Norah Jones and Anoushka Shankar, he was just nominated for a 2013 Grammy Award in the same category as his daughter Anoushka. He had previously won three Grammy's.

Rest In Peace.
