Wild City ‘Together’: Mentoring, Conversations, Skill-Sharing & Performances With Sandunes, BLOT!, Arjun Vagale & More

22 April 2020

The coronavirus pandemic and the necessary global lockdown has brought many lives and industries to a standstill, while subjecting all of us to an economically uncertain future – the repercussions of which will ripple into different spheres of life. India’s vibrant independent music industry is no exception.

As we learn to adapt, we are launching ‘Wild City: Together’, an endeavour to galvanise the music industry to join forces in these trying times and an effort to create a space that can serve to support growth and learning, raise funds for the more vulnerable, and start conversations that look to how we can do things differently when life starts to return to ‘normal’.

As part of ‘Wild City: Together’, leading artists and industry experts will offer one-on-one mentoring sessions, intimate skill-sharing group opportunities and live streamed performances – the details of which can be found below.

100% of the proceeds from the programme collected via donations during the livestreams and registrations, alongside contribution by Wild City per stream, will go towards organisations doing relief work across India to support families, households and communities that are struggling to survive through the crisis, namely Goonj, The Nada Yoga Foundation, SEEDS and Rasoi On Wheels. For more information on these organisations and to donate directly to them, head here.

Mentoring

As part of the programme, esteemed electronic artists like BLOT!, _RHL, Perera Elsewhere, Komorebi, Arjun Vagale, Kohra and Sandunes will offer one-on-one feedback to emerging music producers on any piece of work they have created over a 20-40 minute-long private Zoom session.

To apply for a session, fill the Google form here. Selected applicants will be required to contribute any sum of their choice as a fee for each session, with the suggested minimum contribution being Rs. 500, that will go toward the organisations listed here.

Group Skill-Sharing

‘Wild City: Together’ will also host intimate and accessible group skill-sharing sessions, where 6-10 participants will gain insight into various aspects of music-making and music business directly from some of the most respected names in India’s alternative music scene, over a 45-90 minute-long "closed door" session.

India’s seminal hip-hop label Azadi Records’ co-founder Mo Joshi will lead a workshop on how to set up and run a record label, CD Baby’s Ritnika Nayan will delve into digital music distribution, Synthfarm’s Varun Desai will host a session on modular and analog synthesis, and music business consultant and educator at The True School of Music Vehrnon Ibrahim will discuss PR, marketing and brand building for independent musicians.

Performances

We are also hosting a series of performances by live acts on our Facebook and Instagram as livestreams, during which the audience will be able to make donations directly from the social media platforms. The lineup includes JBABE, Raghav Meattle, Aniruddh Menon and Dolorblind, with more acts to be announced.

Conversations

The first chapter of 'Wild City: Together' also includes a live streamed conversation that will aim to reflect on the industry landscape and look to identify what a ‘new normal’ could and should be post the lockdown. Discussing the past, present and future of the independent music scene, the panel will include: BFR Soundsystem's Taru Dalmia aka Delhi Sultanate who has been actively challenging the norms of music and nightlife in India; NH7 Weekender's Supreet Kaur who will lend insight from her experience of organising large-scale events; REProduce Artists' Rana Ghose who has a been a champion of grassroot artists and organising events with a hyper-local approach; and UnMute's Dev Bhatia, the manager to a large roster of Indian nightlife's mainstay acts. The discussion will be moderated by Wild City's Munbir and Sarah Chawla.

Keep on eye on our socials for dates of all public sessions and performances. For everything else please sign up via forms above.

An evolving online project, the first wave of sessions, workshops and conversations for 'Wild City: Together' is the starting point of a reactive and proactive curation of content. If you have any ideas of subjects you feel need addressing, policies we can work on together, and skill sharing that you would like to offer or would like us to help provide for Chapter 2, get in touch with us via this Google form.

We would also like to take a moment to thank every artist and music industry professional participating in ‘Wild City: Together’ for graciously donating their time to the cause.
