UnBox Festival: SoundCamp Feat. TL Mazumdar, Vinayak, Asvajit, Sandunes & More

10 February 2013
New Delhi
Zorba

Initiated by Gebrüder Teichmann and Border Movement, SoundCamp is a collaboration format that enables artists from South Asia and Germany to engage and collaborate together in the field of electronic music.

SoundCamp’s origins lie in a three week residency that took place in Sri Lanka in August 2012, during which 16 artists from Germany and South Asia exchanged ideas and created music. You can check out a Border Movement video blog from Day 1 on Ruskin Island in Sri Lanka to get an idea of what went down.

SoundCamp's Unbox Edition will run from 5 - 10 February, and will be curated and co-hosted by Border Movement and BLOT. In contrast to SoundCamp in Sri Lanka (which took place surrounded by the lush green backwaters of Colombo), SoundCamp at UnBox will take place in the urban smog of bubbling south Delhi as part of India’s leading festival for interdisciplinary creative output, UnBox Festival.

In total there are 8 selected SoundCamp participants and 4 local instrumentalists who will work in two ad-hoc studios set up on the festival site of MG Road's outdoor venue, Zorba. Within this time they will exclusively compose together and record instrumentalists who’ve been specially invited by UnBox Festival. The aim is to produce and eventually release an UnBox EP and also to showcase some of the fruits of their labour during a collaborative live performance, closing the festival on 10 February. The participants will also contribute to UnBox Festival’s GamesLab fellowship by creating a bank of sounds and scores for the video-games being programmed on site.

With the bassy syncopation of Sanddunes, the melancholic vocal swagger of Peter Cat Recording Company’s front man Suryakant Sawhney and the sound creations of the analogue guru Raumagent Alpha this experiment promises to be a sonic journey into the unknown.

Nucleya, Asvajit, Vinayaka and B.L.O.T.’s Gaurav Malaker may well bring more club/ dancefloor into the equation, something TL Mazumdar (IN) is sure to morph into an abstract jazz drenched monster of an anthem.

This is all mere speculation however and the beauty of such an exchange project is in that the possiblities are vast. A full list of participants can be seen below:
